Upon arriving at Sequim (pronounced Squim), one of the first times we were invited over for dinner by neighbors, we were served planked halibut. Wow, was it good! So where do you buy one...we wanted our own plank! We didn't know and it seemed no one else did either. Our hosts' plank was made for them by a friend of theirs. Since we couldn't readily find one to buy, we made one. Then we made some more to give as presents to other friends. Of course they all said "You should make these to sell... you'll make a fortune!" We experimented with sizes and got a chef in Detroit (5 star restaurant) to try them. He started producing 'specials' based on plank cooking and soon ordered 50 planks from us. And away we went with plank production...
Other occasions for presents came along, and we came up with the idea for making a garden sign for a friend who loved to garden. We produced a rather large sign saying "Gailfriend's Garden." We immediately had a request for another one from someone who also had a friend named Gail who also gardened. People told us "You should make these to sell... you'll make a fortune!" So that's what we're doing.
The 'fortune' part hasn't happened yet, but we have displayed our goods at the Irrigation Festival (don't laugh, it's Sequim's major yearly event and also the longest continuously running festival in the state of Washington, this year was the 107th). We are also displaying at the Lavender Festival (Sequim's second major event - there is a thriving lavender business growing up in the Sequim Valley) and have sold at other local events. From May through October, most Saturdays you can find us at the Sequim Open Air Market. You are also looking at our other venture... the Internet.
We could tell you more, but ...
